About a couple of years ago I had some really wierd skin rashes on only the right hand side of my face. In fact, they really weren't even rashes, just great patches of dry skin which flaked off and left me red and embarrassed underneath!! The patches went in a sort of triangle shape on my cheek and over one side of my nose, and also the right hand side of my forehead just where my eyebrow are.
Discoid Lupus was mentioned at the time, but there was no positive proof and it disappeared after a month or so.
Well, it's now back with avengance, but this time is affecting both sides of my face and I look even more frightful than I did before. I am spending a fortune on Clarins skin stuff, but it's not really making much difference. It doesn't hurt or itch much.
Do you think it's worth mentioning again to my rheummy, or should I just put up with it? Any help would be appreciated.
Love Jeanxxxx

Hi Jean, I would mention it to your rheumy, rather than put up with it. I had a similar rash on my chest, right where the V would be in a V-necked T-shirt. It was horribly dry, red, and flaky, and I put up with it for weeks, even though it was irritating, then I finally went to my GP. He prescribed Betnovate, a steroid cream, and it disappeared like magic. I told my rheumy a couple of weeks ago, & she said to always report a rash, though she would have prescribed exactly the same. She said it would be difficult to pin-point whether it was the RA causing it, or the RA meds. Take care, Kathleen x PS Are you making sure to wear your sun-block when you are on the luge?

Hi Jean
Sorry to hear about your rash, you really don't need anything else. I think you should mention it if it doesn't clear up soon. I've got some ointment that I got from Nurture cosmetics, it's natural and you can use it on all areas of the skin. I think Elizabeth Arden do something similar, but more pricey. I use my ointment on sore patches, it's soothing.
I hope you get some relief from it soon.

Thanks, girls. I will mention it next week.
By the way, Kathleen, I've been using the sun block you gave me for the luging - I thought it was an inferior brand!!!!!!

here is some stuff about the Lupus rashes and treatments
http://www.uklupus.co.uk/fact8.html
I do know to cover the rash, people use a green foundation- You can wear this under your make up and it will take out all the redness, and looks good on paler skins.
It is by Smashbox and is called color correcting primer, I got some of their normal beige foundation- it gives good cover without being heavy, I have quite pale, English Rose sort of colouring so find a lot of the heavy cover stuff too much.
these are nice products too-

if you only have a small patch or stronger cover is needed- try this

or even as a pen

Hi Jenni
Thanks so much for this. I'm positive I DON'T have any sort of Lupus as my skin heals well when the flaky patches disappear. I've just read the info you mentioned on the Lupus site and it makes me even more convinced and certain that this is just some sort of skin reaction to something.
However, the green make-up sounds wonderful and I'm off to order some now.
Thanks for this great info - you're a little twinkling star!!!!!
Lots of love Jeanxxxxxx

Sorry Jean cant be much help on this but hope this clears up soon. However when i started on hydroxy I got flaky patches of skin on my back but it stopped though my skin does have a tendency to get dry so I slap on a load of cream to stop it. think you find its one of the contra indications on hydroxyc.

Thanks Mari. Although I've had this problem on and off for about three years, it could well be the hydroxy which is exacerbating it. I'll watch closely and mention it to the GP.

Oh sorry lovely Jean..I would most definitely mention this. RA can make one very dry, and can affect the skin;
It is linked to RA,it might be a slight psoriasis or dermatitis so best to have it checked.
I wouldn't use anything perfumed on it...
Much love,
Amanda

Hi Jean, my first thought was lupus. When I first had my malar rash, lupus was mentioned and I hastily dismissed the idea. Now I wish i hadn't. I definitely think you should emntion to your rheumy. Take photos to show, as these things tend to disappear when we ahve appts. Maybe a dermy appt would help.

Thanks for all your help, everyone. I'm seeing the GP next week so will ask if I can be referred back to my dermatologist. Have also e-mailed my rheummy and asked him what he thinks.

Hi lovely Jean, hope ya ok. I went to a make up stand in John Lewis last year and asked what they could do for my red patches on my face aswell as the red viens caused my the streoids. They did a make over and i honestly couldn't believe it that the patches and veins were gone (so to speak)! The make up was Bobbi Brown concealer and a foundation with a yellow base, for some reason the green based products didn't work me but then i do have strange skin!. Hope you've had a nice day. love emilyXXX.

One more thing to worry about eh Jean? A lupus rash usually presents itself as a butterfly shape, that is why the butterfly is their logo. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi jenni, ahhh that makes sense as at the time i had got a nice tan so skin was darker than normal, ya right it is lovely and quite gentle on the skin too as mine is sooooooooo sensitive! Hope you have had a nice day.
That's interesting Julie, i didn't make the connection with the logo. XXX.
